In the last few years, Pakistan in the last few years has run into one humanitarian crisis after another: the 2005 earthquake in North West Frontier Province, Azad Jumma and Kashmir, human internal displacement in the aftermath of military operation in Swat and others tribal regions against the Taliban in 2009, and now verymore recently, intense floods have hit the country. ROTA has reacted almost immediately to increase access to educational facilities, improve the quality of education and to provide psychosocial support. Together with partners, volunteers, and local communities, ROTA has been working to ensure that people affected have continuous access to relevant and high-quality primary and secondary education. Future endeavors for ROTA’s Pakistan program includes establishing two vocational training centers in Nar Sher Ali Khan, District Bagh, Azad Jumma and Kashmir. Three projects, two of which are currently on-going, were launched to help the residents of these affected areas. The main partners for these initiatives are the Save the Children Alliance, Care International, and Mercy Corps

In partnership with the Qatar Red Crescent, who already has a presence in the region, 17 schools were reconstructed to benefit students, teachers, and their respective communities. The multi-faceted project was worth $1.8 million.

Addressing Short Coming in ROTA Schools in Bagh AJK, Pakistan

Reach Out to Asia was directly involved in the project by addressing to the short comings in their newly constructed eight schools in the earth quake affected area of Bagh, Pakistan Administered Kashmir.  The construction of ten other permanent schools was implemented by Qatar Red Crescent.  These schools were completed and handed over to the education department. During the handing over, education department officials requested ROTA to also address the short comings left during the reconstruction of schools. ROTA had agreed with the education department and took up this project. The project started on 18th of October 2009 and completed in the last week of January 2010. The completion certificate was issued by the DRU on 9th of March 2010.

Pakistan Youth Development and Life Skills Through Sports

Summary: 

This project trained 20 sports coaches from different areas of the Swat District.  These coaches were jointly identified with the local government District Sports Officer, and represent a number of different sports (Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Hockey etc).  The coaches were trained in youth leadership and development through sports activities. Once they were trained, each coach was to give a month long training program to their teams of youth players, covering aspects of youth leadership and development, including communications and perception, competition, collaboration and negotiation, conflict analysis, managing emotions, reconciliation, trust, and forgiveness, mediation, and consensus-building.

The program’s goal is to inspire and equip an expanding network of young leaders to take informed actions that build and secure productive and just communities throughout the world.  Qatar joins a host of other nations in the network, including the United States, United Kingdom (Scotland), the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Indonesia.

Social Revitalization for Displaced Children in North West Frontier Province, Pakistan

As a result of increasing militant activity in May 2009, the Pakistan army commenced military operations in Buner, Lower Dir, and Swat Valley. The majority of the local population began emigrating to Mardan and Swabi in order to avoid the conflict. By the end of May, the number of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) had swelled to just over three million; many of whom fled their homes without money or other resources.

Emergency Education for Internally-Displaced Peoples (IDPs)

Summary: 
The IDP education program was a response to the emergency situation from constant military activity in Malakand, Dir and Buner Districts. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and ROTA partnership was setup to provide emergency education and was guided by the INEE Minimum Standards for Education in Emergencies, Chronic Crisis and Early Reconstruction. These standards provide guidance and tools on all aspects of education in emergencies and the IRC ensured to meet these standards in its implementation.

The IDP education program was a response to the emergency situation from constant military activity in Malakand, Dir and Buner Districts.

Based on the needs assessment, ROTA partner Hashoo Foundation proposed the establishment of two Vocational/Technical Training Centers called, ‘Human Development Resource Centers’ (HDRCs) in UC Nar Sher Ali Khan to train men and women separately. Each training center will offer six courses including vocational and technical and agricultural- based trainings. These trainings are based on the needs assessment and the natural resources available within the area.
